Post subject:  What is this wood?

I've never seen any thing like this before, not anything even close to looking like this. They are not sure what it is themselves but I'd love to know. It's a 40's Busato as seen here: http://shoppingcart.djangobooks.com/Ite ... d-modele-4.

I agree, have never seen anything like it. Almost looks contrived. What really gets me is when you compare the back and sides one looks flat sawn and one quartered.

it looks like a "manufactured" wood to me. Basically they lay up veneers of alternating colors in differing dimensions or shapes and then slice it at different angles to highlight a made up grain.

Here are a couple of pictures of the grain pattern in curly douglas fir. These ones are sealed before staining, I'd guess. Putting a dark stain on douglas fir will really darken the earlywood, making it a lot more like the Busato.

Look how similar the grain pattern is, especially the first photo.
